More New Arrivals 2009
4/06 As if to make up for the teeny, tiny lambs, Wintergreen produced a single,
homozygous black/grey ram lamb by Tatarian that weighed 10.75 pounds.  No, she didn't
have this baby by herself.  The hornbuds on this boy are
huge, and were stuck behind the
pelvis.  There were a few moments when we didn't know if we'd be able to get him out or
not.  Then we weren't sure if he'd be alright, as he did a lot of choking and gurgling the
first few minutes.  Everybody is healthy and relatively happy; Wintergreen was extremely
swollen, but we got some hemorrhoid gel for her, and the swelling was reduced by 2/3
within a few hours.  Great stuff!  This lamb is a Who's Who of Southram bloodlines
including Peli, Hylur, Visir, and Hunn - he will be staying here!
4/07 Jazzmere is another ewe that didn't look particularly ready to lamb, but she did a
great job for a first-time mom!  I found her all curled up with her lamb at 5:00 this
morning; a black/grey spotted 8-pound ram lamb out of Firethorn.  Kind of neat that the
spots came out!  Being unfamiliar with the drill, Jazzmere was more difficult to coax into
a lambing jug than the seasoned girls - I had to get Tom to help, and we ended up
wrestling her down to the barn.  If it wasn't quite so cold and windy, I might have let her
stay out longer, but Spring is taking its own sweet time arriving this year!  At least we
don't still have snow, like last year! ( Knock on wood).
4/07 Inkberry was also busy this morning, and gave us twin ewe lambs out of Zed!!!  More
dairy ewes!  The girl with the black hood weighed 8 pounds, and her sister with the single
black spot weighed 7 pounds.  We're having some great pattern variations now that we're
finally getting some color.  Yeah!
4/07 Ianthe (formerly Logical) went into labor right after her breakfast, but things were
not so easy for her.  She had a very small stillborn lamb (
very small) out in the pasture,
and we could see a second set of feet coming, but they were the wrong ones.  This girl is
not much calmer than she was when she first came from Tongue River, so we had a hard
time getting her into a jug so I could help her.  Her second lamb, born breach, is a
black/grey 8-pound ram lamb, who seems very healthy despite his unorthodox beginning.
Ianthe is settling down somewhat, although she still freaks out for a minute whenever we
come into the barn.  This lamb is out of Hoss.
4/07 Right after we got Ianthe settled, Aspen decided to have her lamb!  She had a
beautiful 10-pound "white" ewe lamb out of Dragon.  I have the pattern in parenthesis
because she has several black spots on her legs and face that Tom says should make her
spotted.  We'll see if they stay of if they fade.  I'm surprised that Aspen only had a single -
we've had quite a few this year, and I think maybe I put the breeding groups together a bit
too early in November.  I read somewhere that multiples are more likely if the ewe is bred
on her second or third heat instead of the first.  Lesson learned!
