Lost, But Not Forgotten
LF132R   Kalmia (4/24/2005)
Black horned single
Lambing record:
1
Sire: DreamCatcher 88P  (Khan) -
        Bambi grandson,
     great-grandson of Blaevar,
                       Moli and Hunn
Dam:  MardiGras (LF23P) -
        Heli grandaughter
Kalmia was one of the sweetest ewes in our starter flock, and she is still greatly missed.  We
lost her in 2006 due to lambing complications caused by her son Tiger's large size, but through
her loss we learned to breed one-winter ewes to either Leader rams, or mature rams who
consistently sire average-size Icelandic lambs.  Tiger gave us a black daughter out of
Witchhazel this year; her name is Kalmiette, and she will be a happy addition to our HolliBerri
flock.
RUM01R  Summersweet (4/6/2005)
Moorit polled twin
Lambing record:
1
Sire: Marquis (AAF5M) -
       Old Mori lineage x 3
Dam:  HFI019L -
      Old Mori x 5
Summersweet was the second polled ewe we purchased solely because of her beautiful face.
As it turns out, she had the most awesome fleece - tons of long, heavy thel of the most
gorgeous color.  We lost her the summer of 2006 to barberpole worm, which recent studies
show to have a 10-day reproductive cycle instead of the usual 21-day cycle.  It also appears
that these parasites migrate through the lungs, which can prove to be too much for an animal
already stressed by heat and humidity.   We are hoping to locate some Cosecure
copper/selenium/cobalt boluses which have proven in England to reduce ovine barberpole
populations by at least 80%.  Meanwhile, we continue to search for other methods of parasite
control that will eliminate resistant worms, including Cydectin pour-on for cattle (give as an
oral drench), and a product called Supaverm, which works great on sheep in Europe and
Australia, but is only approved in the USA for koi fanciers, probably due to the carry-over it
has.  We are so grateful that Summersweet left us a daughter to carry on her gentle
temperament and lovely locks.  Sweetbriar, Summersweet's daughter, gave us twins as a
One-winter ewe.
LF150R  Daphne (5/23/2005)
White horned single
Lambing record:
1
Sire:  Jimmie (TNY810P) - AI son
          of Skumur;
   True North dairy genetics
Dam:  Agnes (TNY875P) - Bambi
          grandaughter;
     True North lineage
Daphne was an incredible gal, with a "heads up" attitude from the moment of her birth.
She was the friendliest of our Leadergals, and the most solidly built.  She also fell prey to
barberpole - enough said.  Fortunately she left us a beautiful son out of Ash, who has the
same attitude and almost the same look as his mom.  Kudzu joined his father, "Ash" in the
ram pen this Fall.  We now have two granddaughters to keep.
Barberpole is an equal opportunity killer, as we
learned when we lost this twin daughter of
Andromeda and Rubus.  She would have been
an awesome ewe, with the most wonderful
crimpy fleece and a fantastic meat build.  Her
sister Lindia did not lamb this year, and is now
humongous.
LNB09P  Balsam (4/17/2005)
  Black spotted horned twin
  Lambing record: 1,
1
Sire:  Behl ram LNB96M - great grandson of Askur
                                             and Noi

Champion Icelandic Yearling Ram - Michigan Fiber
    Festival 2003
Grand Champion Fleece - Wisconsin Sheep and
    Wool Festival 2004
Dam:  LNB28L - Noi great grandaughter
This graceful ewe had "fleece" written all over her, with Noi on
both the top and the bottom of her pedigree.  She had perfectly
formed horns and a LONG back.  She was also one of our major
non-conformists, which is why she was outside in a storm and
got struck by lightning.  Fortunately Balsam was bred to Tiger
this year and left us a beautiful solid black ewe lamb - Balsams's
Silhouette.
